GS1 DataBar™ Barcode Released:

GS1, formerly the UCC-Council.org, has renamed the Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) barcode to the GS1 Databar. This new barcode type can identify small items and can contain more information that the current EAN/UPC barcode. The GS1 System provides several types of bar code for use by GS1 members depending on the application. The bar codes used by GS1 include EAN/UPC, GS1 DataBar, GS1-128, ITF-14, Data Matrix, and Composite Component. For example, the UCC/EAN-128 will now be known as the GS1-128.

GS1 DataBar will enable GTIN identification for hard-to-mark products such as fresh foods and can carry GS1 Application Identifiers like serial numbers, lot numbers, and expiration dates. This will create the opportunity for solutions supporting product authentication and traceability, product quality and effectiveness, variable measure product identification, and creating coupons.

IDAutomation is in the process of updating our documentation over the next couple of years to reflect this transition. For more information please read the press release, Reduced Space Symbology is now GS1 DataBar™
