The EZ Barcode Font Package provides 12 different TrueType self-checking
barcode font types that may be used for various barcoding purposes such
as name tags, inventory, data entry and other applications where barcoding
can increase productivity. This is a scaled down package that contains three
(3) of the six (6) different heights of only the TrueType fonts offered
in our Font Advantage Packages for
Code 39 and
Codabar. The following is
a breakdown of the barcode fonts provided in this package:
- Code 39 - Six Code 39 barcode fonts are provided as normal
and human readable versions in short, medium and large heights. The
"human-readable" versions contain the letters below the barcode. Code39
(also called Code 3 of 9 and LOGMARS) is used for general barcoding
purposes where letters and numbers are to be encoded. Code 39 contains
barcodes for the numbers 0-9, the letters A-Z, the space character and
the following symbols: - $ / + % .
- Codabar - Six Codabar barcode fonts are provided as normal
and human-readable versions in short, medium and large heights. Because
the Codabar font is only used for numbers, it is not as wide as Code
39. If encoding numbers only, use this barcode font type if the barcode
width is an issue.
Step 1 - Download and install the package. After installing the package,
the samples and user manual are accessible by choosing Start - Programs
and looking in the appropriate group.
Step 2 - Use the fonts to create barcodes in the application.
When creating barcodes that will encode letters and numbers, use Code 39.
If encoding numbers only, use the Codabar font.
- How to use Code 39 in any application - IDAutomation's Code
39 barcode fonts are easy to use in applications and can be entered
directly from the keyboard. All barcodes require a start and stop character
and these can also be entered from the keyboard. For example, to create
a barcode that encodes the data "1234ABCD" with the Code 39 Font:
(1) select the "IDAutomationHC39S" barcode font from the
list of fonts in the application
(2) type the start character, in this case it is "!"
(3) type the data, in this case it is "1234ABCD"
(4) type the stop character, in this case it is "!"
and then change the font back to the default font of the document. Therefore,
to create a barcode that can be scanned, the text should be !1234ABCD!
, then highlight this text and select the IDAutomationHC39S font for
it. To avoid the "*" from showing up in the human readable version of
the fonts, use "(" and ")" as the start and stop character. To print
the barcode symbol representing a space type or print "=" (the equal
character) instead of a space character or use IDAutomation's
Font Automation Tools
to perform automatic conversion. For this reason, try not to use the
space character unless it is required.
- How to use Codabar in any application - IDAutomation's Codabar
barcode fonts are easy-to-use in applications and can be entered directly
from the keyboard. All barcodes require a start and stop character which
can also be entered from the keyboard. Codabar barcodes use the letters
A, B, C or D as start and stop characters. For example, to create a
barcode that encodes the data "1234" with the Codabar font:
(1) select the "IDAutomationHCBS" barcode font from
the list of fonts in the application
(2) type the start character, in this case it is "A"
(3) type the data, in this case it is "1234"
(4) type the stop character, in this case it is "B"
and then change the font back to the default font of the document.
- Calculated field use for Code 39 - Barcodes may be dynamically
created as a calculated field in a text box by using a formula that
appends the start and stop characters and by selecting the barcode font
for the text box. This is possible in several applications including
the following:
- Active Reports - Field1.Text
="*"&Field&"*"
example...
- Clarion - loc:barcode='*'&left(clip(DataField))&'*'
- Crystal Reports - Enter
"*" & Field & "*" in a calculated
field.
- FileMaker Pro - Enter
"*" & Field & "*" in a calculated field so that the asterisk
is appended to the beginning and ending of the data from the source
field.
- Lotus Notes - A formula that places a return function
(in
extended39) between fields: "*"
+ DataField1 + "$M" + DataField2 + "*"
- Lotus Approach - Combine('*',
DataField, '*') - Here is an approach formula that also replaces
spaces with the "=" character as required:
Combine('*', Translate(DataField,'
','='), '*')
- Lotus 123 for Windows® - Enter in another cell, text
data from cell C3: ("*"&C3&"*")
- this formula converts a number in cell C9 to text for barcoding:
("*"&@STRING(C9,0)&"*")
- Microsoft® Access - =("!"&[Table.Field1]&"!")
- This formula places a tab (in
extended39) between fields: =("!"&[Table.Field1]
& "$I" & [Table.Field2] & "!")
- Microsoft® Excel - Enter in another cell, text data from
cell C3: =("!"&C3&"!")
- Oracle Reports and Forms - Place an asterisk before and
after the data and then apply IDAutomation's barcode font to the
field.
- QuickBooks - Refer to IDAutomation's
QuickBooks
Barcode Tutorial.
- Font Tools included - If a checksum
is needed for Code 39 (such as for
HIBC, LIC
and LOGMARS), IDAutomation provides the Code39Mod43() function
in all font tools
for this purpose. IDAutomation also provides a Code39() function that
converts spaces to the "=" character and automatically adds the start
and stop characters to the barcode font. Available
font tools include

The X dimension (X is the width of the narrow bar) of IDAutomation's
Code 39 barcode font is listed below for various point sizes. The narrow
to wide ratio is 3:1 which is recommended by international standards. IDAutomation
also offers the Universal
Barcode Font Advantage™ which is designed to support most linear barcodes
as a single font on multiple operating systems and locales. This Universal
Font can provide wide to narrow ratios of 2:1, 2.5:1 and 3:1.
The Code 39 barcode fonts have been specially designed to produce dependable
barcodes when printed at small point sizes. If printing barcodes compatible
with all barcode scanners, print at 12 or more points. The Code 39 fonts
consistently scan with the
IDAutomation
USB Barcode Scanner when printed at 6 points. Excluding the start and
stop characters, 16 CPI print density can be achieved when printing at 6
points, which is about 5 mils.

In the EZ package, three (3) different versions of the Code 39 barcode
fonts are provided to support human-readable versions and different width
and height requirements. Because each single font can be printed at various
point sizes, there are several width/height combinations that can be produced.
The length of any barcode can be determined by multiplying the X dimension
by the number of characters and then by 16. For example, 10 characters at
12 points should be about 1.28" long because .008 * 10 * 16 = 1.28. The
start and stop characters should be included in these calculations.

| * Measurements are approximate and were measured
when printed at 12 points which should work for most scanners. Measurements
for Human Readable fonts do not include the text below. At 12 points,
the X dimension is about 8 mils.
To print at a different height, find the font that has the height
closest to what is needed and use this formula to find the point
size to print the font at to get that height:
12 * (height wanted) / (height at 12 points)
= (point size converted to integer)
For example, if using IDAutomationHC39M and the size is to
be about .75" tall, print it at 18 points because: 12 * .75 / .5
= 18
