PLANET Barcode Font Information

The USPS PLANET barcode is designed to track both inbound and outbound letter mail. The PLANET barcodes complement the existing POSTNET barcodes. The PLANET barcodes are required by the U. S. Post Office to use their CONFIRM service.

CONFIRM provides confirmation that customers received the mail, allowing mailers to synchronize telemarketing programs with direct mail campaigns or augment other advertising media with their mailings.

Confirm is built on the PLANET Code, a 12-digit barcode:

  • The first two digits represent the service (21=Origin Confirm or 22=Destination Confirm).
  • The next 9 digits identify the mail piece (see Figures 2 and 3 in section 5, from the manual, for more detail).
  • The 12th digit is a check-sum digit that helps USPS detect errors.

Read more about printing and generating PLANET Codes.

To use CONFIRM, the USPS customer prints the PLANET codes in the form of a 12-digit barcode, on the front of the envelope anywhere in the wide area barcode read zone. The start/stop character (which can be printed using the asterisk "*" character) surrounds the digits of the PLANET code. The first two digits of the PLANET code denotes the service expected. The next nine indicate customer information, and the 12th is a check-sum digit.

To find the check digit, use the POSTNET() function in IDAutomation's font automation tools or determine it by adding all the numbers to encode in the barcode and then find the smallest number, that when added to the sum, equals a multiple of 10. Contact the USPS manager of the PLANET program at the post office to obtain more information on the formatting and placement of the PLANET codes.
