Evaluation Version of ActiveX Barcode Controls and Crystal UFLs do not Display on Windows Server 2003

Operating System: Windows Server 2003

Products:

Problem:
Applications using the above mentioned products will terminate unexpectedly, return no data, or cause a general protection fault error in Crystal Reports.

The problem is created when the evaluation version dialog message box is displayed. If the Microsoft Messenger program (not the same as MSN or Windows Messenger) is not running, the messages will be suppressed causing the application to terminate unexpectedly. The purchased version of the product will not cause the issue.

Solution(s):

Make sure that the Microsoft Messenger Service is running.

Services can be accessed in two ways:

  1. RIGHT click on the My Computer Icon and then select Manage.
  2. Under Computer Management click on the Services tab.

From there, locate the Messenger Service and RIGHT click on the service and select START.
(NOTE: Once the server is re-booted, the Messenger Service will be disabled again. To manually disable the service, follow the instructions above and select STOP when right clicking the Messenger service.)

Additionally, the purchased version of the product will not cause this issue.
