"Why do the java.awt libraries require a functional X Server?"
The Abstract Window Types libraries (AWT) are there to provide basic Windows-Type graphical facilities for a Java programmer to send graphics to the end user. The UNIX version of these libraries are specifically created to use the X Server to render these graphics. So, to answer the question in its simplest form: The java.awt libraries are actually wrapper classes to produce graphics based on the X Server operating environment. This means to produce graphics, such as PNG & JPEG files, run the awt libraries from an X Server environment. One of IDAutomation's customers was able to use Sun JDK 1.4.1 on Linux in headless mode. IDAutomation’s Java Barcode Products have been modified to be compatible with headless operation as of April 2, 2003. If an active Priority Support and Upgrade Subscription through RegNow
