Making VCards with QR Codes

VCards are a very popular type of new technology that uses QR Codes with data encoded into MECARD format, allowing smart phone users to scan the QR Code on a business card, for example, for automatic entry into the contacts list on the mobile device. New License Options for Hosted Barcode Generators

One of the most cutting-edge barcode generation technologies of today exists in the cloud, as a hosted barcode generation service that allows users to display barcode images on web pages, in databases or anywhere else, as long as the application is connected to the internet. How to Generate GS1-128 Barcode Labels

Picking the Best Barcode Printer

Integrating barcode technology into a new or existing business process can be rather complicated, especially if you don't have all of the information you need to make the right decisions in terms of determining the best barcode type, selecting the right barcode generation product, choosing the best barcode scanner for your needs and finally, and picking the best barcode printer. The good news is that you don't have to be a genius to understand which barcode printer will best suit your needs, and there are just a few important points to consider before making a purchase.

Which Printers Will Print Barcodes?

Most printers on the market today are capable of printing barcodes without any special software or modification. Laser and inkjet printers can print readable barcodes right out of the box, although Dot Matrix printers do not print at resolutions high enough to create barcodes that can be read by scanners. Direct thermal and thermal transfer printers are excellent for printing barcode labels one-at-a-time from a roll, and laser or inkjet printers are ideal for printing onto label sheets.

Advantages of Different Printers

While most any printer is capable of printing readable barcodes, there are distinct advantages and disadvantages for each. Standard laser and inkjet printers are excellent for printing barcodes onto label sheets, and this is usually the preferred method for tasks that include creating tags for retail or inventory purposes. Label roll printers are a better option in situations where shipping labels are being printed, or other labels with barcodes that will be printed one at a time.

Label roll printers are usually either thermal transfer or direct thermal printers, and there are some important differences that a potential buyer should be aware of before moving forward:

Direct Thermal printers are the most affordable label roll printers because they only require a label roll. The print head burns the printed image directly onto the labels.
Thermal Transfer printers produce the highest quality labels and require a label roll and film or ribbon roll because the print head first burns the image onto the film, and then the film is pressed onto the label. This type of heat transfer printing means the labels will more easily withstand potential damage from heat or pressure. Thermal transfer printers can also support direct thermal printing.

Determining which type of printer may be something of a challenge if you are not educated on the different types of printers, their strengths and weaknesses, or other factors. It is important to understand what you are purchasing, especially if you are interested in purchasing a printer online, because many manufacturers have strict return policies. Choosing the Right Barcode Reader

We are neck-deep in our "Choosing the Right Barcode Products" series, and while last's weeks article focused on picking the right barcode generator, this third installment asks one of the most important questions: Which barcode reader is best for me? There is a pretty wide selection of barcode scanners to choose from that can read different barcode types or have unique capabilities that other readers may not be able to provide. There is no reason to invest in equipment that has more functionality than you plan to utilize, although it is important to make sure the item you are purchasing is going to serve your needs. You can help determine your needs by asking the following questions.

Which Barcode Types are Supported?

It's important to know which types of barcodes you need to read, because you want to be sure that the scanner you purchase is going to support the reading of that particular symbology. Just about every barcode scanner on the market today can read common linear barcode types like Code 128, Code 39 and UPC among others, and many 2D Barcode Imagers are capable of reading linear barcode types in addition to two-dimensional symbologies like Data Matrix, PDF417 and QR Code. The first thing to do is figure out which barcode types you need to read, and then make sure the item you decide to purchase supports those types.

Which Connection Type is Best?

Many barcode scanner models have different connection options such as USB, keyboard wedge or PS2 or RS232. Although all connection types are still used today, USB connections are the choice of the vast majority of companies. RS232 connections are still used in some heavily industrious settings, and PS2 or keyboard wedge connections have lost favor with the rise of the USB barcode scanner. One of the important distinctions to make between PS2 and RS232 connections against USB is that PS2 and RS232 connections require the system to be powered down while the connection is made, and then the scanner will work upon system start. With USB, you only need to plug the cable into the USB port on your computer or hub, whether the computer is on or off, and it will take care of the rest.

Wireless is another popular option and is the preferred choice among those who need to scan items over a more widespread area and cannot do this effectively while tethered to the computer. Most wireless barcode scanner kits consist of a hand-held cordless scanner and a charger/base that must be connected to the computer via USB cable. When the scanner reads a barcode, the data is communicated to the cradle and then output wherever the cursor is positioned on the computer.

Can I Store Scanned Data in a Barcode Reader?

Most barcode readers only act as a medium, reading barcodes and then passing the data through to the computer which is output where the cursor is located on the computer monitor. Portable memory barcode scanners are unique in that they do not transmit scanned data to a computer in real-time because there is no connection to a computer. The scanned data is instead stored in the reader itself for later bulk transfer into a computer via USB cable. This is an extremely efficient method of barcode scanning for those who work in the field, for checking students into class and much more.

There are several factors that you need to consider in this area before moving forward.

Which Product is Right For Me?

IDAutomation provides quite a range of products that allow many different types of barcode generation through a variety of applications and operating environments. There are three main types of products that can enable barcode generation, all with their own unique advantages and drawbacks.

Fonts must be installed on every machine that will print or generate a barcode from a font. Font encoders must also be used to format the data before the font can be applied, and IDAutomation provides free encoders for our linear barcode fonts for use in many applications like Excel, Word, Crystal Reports, .NET, Java and more. Fonts may be used to print a barcode type from a variety of different environments and applications, but most font packages only include one specific barcode type.
Components are used as parts of an application to generate barcodes. Most often, components are used in development environments and require special skills to integrate into existing or custom applications. Where fonts generate one barcode type in many types of applications, components generate a variety of barcode types in just one type of application such as Java, ActiveX, ASP.NET and others.
Applications are the easiest to use, and are stand-alone software programs that allow easy barcode image generation, or barcode generation for printing barcodes onto labels. These Windows-compatible applications are generally capable of linking to other applications and databases and have some powerful and useful capabilities beyond.

So, now you have an idea as to whether you need a font package, a component or an application. Which Barcode Type is Best?

To decide which barcode type will best suit your needs, consider the following:

What type of information do you want to encode?
Different barcode types are capable of encoding different information. Common examples include uppercase letters, lower case letters, numbers, special characters and functions. It is important to be sure that the barcode type you want to use is capable of encoding the data you need in the barcode itself.
How small (or large) do you need your barcode to be?
Some barcode types such as Code 39 can get very large depending on the number of characters being encoded, while high-density barcodes like Code 128 are able to encode more data in less space. 2D barcodes like Data Matrix and QR Code can encode up to 800 characters of information, and may be sized quite small in comparison to others.
Is there a specific standard or specification your barcodes should meet?
There are quite a few standards that exist for a given industry, and a variety of different standards can be met within the same barcode.

It can be overwhelming to determine which method of barcode generation will best suit your needs, but there are a few excellent choices that stand out as the easiest barcode generators to use.

Code 39 Barcode Fonts

Code 39 barcode fonts are the easiest type of font to use when generating a barcode because the only formatting they require is an asterisk (*) at the beginning and end of the data. Then, simply highlight the data (with asterisks) and select the appropriate Code 39 font to turn that text into a readable barcode. Virtually every other barcode font type requires much more complex formatting in order to display a readable barcode, which makes Code 39 an excellent choice over others.

It can sometimes be a challenge to determine which barcode type will best suit the needs of your business process or procedure. Different barcode types may have different capabilities. For example, Code 39 is a symbology that allows printing of upper-case letters and numbers, where Code 128 fonts allow both upper and lower-case letters, numbers, ASCII characters and functions. To take it one step further, 2D barcodes such as Data Matrix or QR Code can encode upwards of 800 characters of information of all kinds, from standard data, to web links, and even vCards in the case of QR. So, why choose Code 128?

Code 128 A, B, C and Auto

Code 128 is divided into three distinct character sets A, B, C and Auto which utilizes a combination of the previous three sets. Code 128 A encodes special characters as well as ASCII characters 00 to 95 which consist of the numbers 0 through 9, upper-case A through Z and control characters. Code 128 B encodes special characters as well as ASCII characters 32 to 127 including numbers 0 to 9 and both upper/lower case letters A to Z. Code 128 C encodes FNC1 in addition to ASCII characters 00 to 99 for double density encoding of numeric-only data.

There is nothing more frustrating than purchasing a barcode font package, patiently reading the instructions and creating a barcode that looks good, only to find that your barcode scanner doesn't read it. This may be due to a number of different factors, and thanks to the fine folks in our technical support department, we have outlined the top five reasons why your barcode fonts may not be scanning correctly.

Has the Data Been Encoded?

Unlike traditional letter-fonts, barcode fonts require special formatting so that the data will be scannable once the barcode font is applied to it. This is true of most barcode types, with the exception of Code 39 and a few others. Formatting the data may involve adding start/stop characters, or a check-digit to the data which essentially let the scanner know where the barcode begins and ends. Other ways of formatting the data include manipulating it so that it is interleaved to create a smaller barcode, or converting the data-to-encode to a special-character text string that the barcode font can understand, and will turn into a correct barcode once the text string and font are combined. There are a wide variety of font encoder tools that will format barcode data, with some being more automatic than others.

Is the Barcode Type Enabled in the Scanner?

It is a good idea to make sure that your barcode scanner is configured to read the type of barcode you are trying to scan. While some barcode types are enabled by default in a scanner, many others must be manually activated in order to read. If you have confirmed that the scanner is programmed to read that type and it still doesn't recognize the barcode, it may be a good idea to contact the scanner manufacturer.

What is the Quality of the Printed Barcode?

In some cases, barcodes that are displayed can lose quality once they are printed. It is important to be sure that the quality of the barcode remains high. On the other hand, if there are too many characters being encoded in a barcode, then it will be too large and will not scan properly. Decreasing the font size and re-scanning may solve this issue.

Encode 2D Barcodes in Excel with VBA

Encoding 2D barcodes manually is virtually impossible due to the high-complexity of the mathematics involved in the process, and the amount of time it would take to do something manually which can be done nearly instantly with the help of an encoder, such as the Barcode Add-In for Microsoft Excel, or VBA functions which can generate encoded data for easy mail-merge capabilities.

One of our most popular font encoder tools, IDAutomation VBA Macros format the data-to-encode into a special text string which will generate an accurate 2D barcode, after the font is applied to it. These VBA macros can be placed into certain cells, and will take data from other certain cells and display the encoded data. Then, simply performing a mail-merge and applying the appropriate 2D barcode font in Microsoft Word or a similar program would generate those accurate barcode types. In some situations in Excel, the cells may need some adjustment before the full 2D barcode can be displayed.

Microsoft Excel is one of the most common software applications that can be used to generate a broad range of linear and 2D barcode types such as Code 128, Intelligent Mail, Interleaved 2 of 5, Data Matrix and PDF417 among others. While it is possible to install an ActiveX barcode generator into Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel or Access, fonts are an option that allow for a greater flexibility across operating systems and applications that ActiveX simply cannot match.

Even though fonts may be a better implementation than another component such as an ActiveX Control or stand-alone barcode image generator, that does not necessarily mean they are an out-of-the-box solution. With the exception of self-checking barcodes like Code 39 and Codabar, all other barcode types require that the data first be encoded into a special text string that will result in a readable barcode when combined with the appropriate font.

In all realms of business, Microsoft Excel continues to be one of the most popular methods of generating Code 128 Barcodes from fonts. Generating barcodes on a Macintosh operating system is not as easy as it is with a Windows operating system, mainly because Windows has seen a lot more involvement in terms of business productivity. Because of this, it's only natural that most products intended for use in a business environment would be geared toward Windows. In recent years, however, Macintosh has found a home, specifically in the marketing and printing industries. Naturally, the need for barcode technology to be compatible with Macintosh has never been greater.

IDAutomation has been working to create dependable barcode generation products for Mac users for years. While developing barcodes on a Mac is easy with the Java Barcode Package, this ease-of-use doesn't much extend beyond a developer. Updates to the Linear Java Package:

Improved FNC1 functionality - With apply tilde set to true, the parentheses in the DataToEncode variable will be encoded as FNC1 characters.
Manual start character selection - The start character for code 128 can now be manually selected in auto mode. By including the start character as the first digit in DataToEncode will specify which character set to start in, for example DataToEncode = IABCD will encode the data in set B. New Product: Data Matrix C++ .H Header File

IDAutomation now offers a C++ header file for the Data Matrix ECC200 symbology which meets the ISO/IEC 16022 specification. The file is provided, upon request, with the purchase of any Developers License for the Data Matrix Font & Encoder Advantage Package and a signed Source Code Agreement.

This header file uses the C++ libraries to return an encoded string that can be used with the IDAutomationDMatrix. Both the method declaration and implementation are in the header file, so no .cpp file is necessary. Include the header file in the source code and it is ready to use. The header file contains no OS specific code and has been QA tested with G++ on Ubuntu Linux and Visual Studio versions 6, 2003 and 2005.

The Code 128 Font Advantage Package has been updated with improved Unicode compatibility and new digitally signed TrueType, OpenType and PostScript fonts. The new fonts, when used with a feature level 10 or greater font encoder, can display human readable text interpretationswithout showing the check character. The font also shows human readable text in auto mode and when switching character sets. Additionally, GS1-128 AIs may be easily encoded with the parentheses or tilde methods and are also visible in the human readable version. New Hardware: Access Control Systems

Security card access systems provide total-control access to buildings or certain areas by limiting admittance and/or setting time-of-day restrictions. With the KeyScan Access Control System, an individual can pass their contactless or proximity access card in front of the card reader where the reader will decrypt the "max secure code" and authenticate it with a 3-pass encryption/decryption to unlock the algorithm. The credential is then sent to the access control management software to verify the access availability through KeyScan's proprietary 36-bit Wiegand protocol. The K-SECURE Mifare credential provides anti-counterfeiting protection using Keyscan's Max Secure encryption technology on 'over the air' transmission between the reader and card.

IDAutomation.com has released a new version of their ActiveX controls to address a possible vulnerability caused by the use of insecure libraries inherit to ActiveX technologies. Under very specific conditions, the vulnerability could allow a DOS attack to take place on the effected system. The latest release of all IDAutomation's ActiveX products implement secure libraries which eliminate the possibility of such attacks.

This vulnerability also applies to the Windows DLLs and ActiveX Controls included in the PDF417 and DataMatrix Font and Encoder packages.

We have updated the PostNet Barcode Package to now include the Intelligent Mail barcode that the USPS implemented in March of 2007. Intelligent Mail (AKA OneCode Solution Barcode) is the new barcode symbology used to track and sort letters and contains a suite of services, including the Confirm Service, which is referred to as OneCode Confirm, and the Address Change Service, which is referred to as OneCode ACS.

GS1 DataBar Barcode Released

GS1, formerly the UCC-Council.org, has renamed the Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) barcode to the GS1 Databar. This new barcode type can identify small items and can contain more information that the current EAN/UPC barcode. The GS1 System provides several types of bar code for use by GS1 members depending on the application. The bar codes used by GS1 include EAN/UPC, GS1 DataBar, GS1-128, ITF-14, Data Matrix, and Composite Component. For example, the UCC/EAN-128 will now be known as the GS1-128.

GS1 DataBar will enable GTIN identification for hard-to-mark products such as fresh foods and can carry GS1 Application Identifiers like serial numbers, lot numbers, and expiration dates. This will create the opportunity for solutions supporting product authentication and traceability, product quality and effectiveness, variable measure product identification, and creating coupons.

PDF417 Font and Encoder Update

A new version of the PDF417 Font and Encoder has been released that includes a Native VB Module for Visual Basic, Excel and Access, which is a complete encoder function in VB form. It may be slower than accessing the ActiveX DLL and the ApplyTilde feature is not available. However, when distributing an application, the ActiveX DLL does not need to be distributed.
