Read and Verify Drivers Licenses with Magnetic Stripe Readers
The data stored on magnetic stripes on driver's licenses may be easily
swiped and decoded with a magstripe (magnetic stripe) reader. When decoded,
this information may be helpful for verifying age, determining fake IDs,
automatically populating fields of an order form or automating customer
lookup at kiosks. Data is stored on the magstripe according to the American
Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and is available for
licenses in many states and
Canadian jurisdictions. Many U. S. drivers' licenses also include a
2D barcode, which is easily read with a
2D Barcode Scanner.
The
data stored on the magnetic stripe of a driver's license includes the
following:
- State or Province
- City
- Last Name
- First Name
- Middle Name
- Home Address
| The following states support magnetic swipe driver's
licenses: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida,
Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri,
New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina,
Texas, Vermont and U.S. Dept. of State. |
- Expiration Date
- Birth date
- Driver's License Number
- Sex
- Height
- Weight
- Hair Color
- Eye Color
The magstripe readers listed below all have the ability to be programmed
so that when a license is swiped, the data returned from the internal decoder
returns only what is needed for the intended application. For example, in
an age verification system, a mag reader may be programmed to return <First
Name> [TAB] <Last Name> [TAB] <Birth Date> [ENTER]. The readers listed below
emulate a USB keyboard, so that anything decoded appears as if it had been
typed.
