Interleaved 2 of 5 Barcode Font Features

Order Interleaved 2 of 5 Barcode FontsInterleaved 2 of 5, also known as ITF, is a numeric barcode which is used for encoding number pairs in a high-density barcode format. Interleaved 2 of 5 was designed for character self-checking, which eliminates the requirement for checksum characters; although checksum characters are required by some ITF specifications because they do maximize data integrity. ITF barcodes always contain an even number of digits, because a single ITF barcode character represents two numbers to achieve a higher density than other barcode types.

The ITF barcode character set consists of barcode symbols representing double-digit characters 00 to 99 in addition to start and stop characters. The complete printed ITF barcode contains a leading quiet zone, a start pattern, Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode representing encoded data, a stop pattern and a trailing quiet zone which should be 10 times the width of the short bar, according to ANSI specifications.

Using Check Digits with ITF Barcode Fonts

When generating ITF-14, EAN-14, SSC-14 and DUN14 barcodes, a MOD 10 check digit is usually required. The MOD 10 may be calculated using a free IDAutomation font encoder tool, or it can be done manually by adding up the odd numbers, multiplying them by 3, adding up the even numbers, and determining the number that when added to the sum will produce a multiple of 10. For example, the check digit for 123456789 is 5 because (3*(1+3+5+7+9))+(2+4+6+8) = 95 and 95 + 5 =100. When calculating check digits, the data to encode should be an odd number of digits because the check digit is interleaved with the last digit. IDAutomation recommends using the Online Font Encoder to test the results of manual calculations.

Interleaved 2 of 5 may also be used as for German Post Identcode and Leitcode barcodes, which require a unique checksum to be calculated. The calculation is similar to USS Interleaved 2 of 5 MOD 10, except that even numbers are multiplied by 9 and odd numbers by 4. For example, the check digit for 12345678901 would be "6" because (4*(1+3+5+7+9+1))+(9*(2+4+6+8+0)=284 and 284 + 6 = 290.

Accurate Point Size for ITF Fonts

IDAutomation's Interleaved 2 of 5 Barcode Fonts were created to meet ANSI and CEN requirements when printing with a font size of 12 or greater. The N Dimension (narrow to wide ratio) of this font is fixed at 2.75 to 1, and the X dimension (width of the narrow bar) of various point sizes for IDAutomation's ITF barcode font is listed below. These fonts are designed to produce barcodes that consistently scan when printed at all point sizes with a laser printer with 600 DPI or greater resolution. When printing at resolutions of 300 DPI or less, consider the Universal Barcode Font Advantage, which can produce ANSI grade A barcode symbols at low resolutions.

Height and Text Interpretation

Twelve versions of the Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode font are provided to support human-readable formats as well as different size requirements. Fonts with an H in the name are human-readable versions and fonts with a B in the name are bearer bar versions. The last characters in the font file name determine the height of the barcode, with the shortest being XS and the tallest being XXL. Because each font may be printed at various point sizes, there are several height/width combinations that may be produced.

To print at a different height, find the font that has the height closest to what is needed and use this formula to find the appropriate point size:

12 * (height desired) / (height at 12 points) = (point size converted to integer)

For example, if using IDAutomationI25L and the font should be .75" tall, print it at 18 points:
12 * .75 / .5 = 18

Printing Interleaved 2 of 5 Barcode Fonts

The following character set is provided for developers who wish to understand how numbers are paired into single digits and where ITF symbols are located within the font. The ITF Code column lists the character or function that the barcode scanner will read for the associated symbol. The columns ASCII, Char and Unicode are unique to IDAutomation Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode fonts and designate the location in either ASCII or Unicode where the barcode symbol for the character resides. The Char column lists the character that resides at the ASCII location which may be used to print the corresponding symbol. To manually create a barcode with this chart, use the following process:

  1. Include the START character: Ë
  2. Include the data characters from the char columns that represent 2 numbers from the ITF code column. For example, the number of 772233 is represented in characters n7B
  3. Include the STOP character: Ì
  4. Combine the resulting text string with the barcode font: Ën7BÌ
